Thermal Transfer & Direct Thermal Labels Explained

Direct Thermal Labels-2

Thermal transfer labels are printed using a ribbon, with heat transferring ink onto the label surface. This method produces a durable, long-lasting print, ideal for manufacturing, warehousing, asset tracking and compliance labelling. Different label and ribbon combinations can be specified to suit demanding environments or specialist applications.

Direct thermal labels do not require a ribbon. Instead, the label material reacts to heat from the printhead to create the image. These labels are commonly used for short-life applications such as delivery, logistics and fresh food labelling, where exposure to heat, light or abrasion is limited.

Many modern barcode printers support both methods, allowing businesses to choose the most appropriate and cost-effective solution.

Diamond Transfer Plus Printer Ribbons

Diamond Transfer Plus Thermal Transfer Ribbons

Weyfringe’s Diamond Transfer Eco Plus thermal transfer ribbons are engineered for consistent, high-quality printing across a wide range of barcode labels. Designed to perform reliably in today’s high-speed thermal printers, these ribbons are used extensively across manufacturing, logistics and service industries where clarity, consistency and uptime are critical.

All Weyfringe stock ribbons are SOLFREE and manufactured without the use of solvents. By using SOLFREE eco-friendly ribbons, you can reduce your carbon footprint by up to 70% compared to traditional ribbon types, when the entire manufacturing process is considered. This equates to a saving of approximately 365g of CO₂ every time you use a SOLFREE ribbon from Weyfringe.

In addition to the environmental benefits, Diamond Transfer Plus ribbons feature an advanced ribbon back coating that significantly reduces friction between the ribbon and the printhead. This helps to extend printhead life, reducing wear, minimising downtime and lowering maintenance and replacement costs over time. Better for the environment and better for your operating costs.

Key Benefits

    • Sharp, crisp barcode and text definition for reliable scanning
    • Consistent performance at higher print speeds
    • Smooth, low-friction back coating to reduce printhead wear and extend printer life
    • SOLFREE, solvent-free manufacture, reducing environmental impact
    • Lower total cost of ownership through reduced maintenance and downtime

Let's Make It Stick

Got Questions About Labels and Ribbons? We’ve Got Answers..

Q. Which labels do Zebra printers use?

Zebra printers use either thermal transfer labels (printed using a ribbon) or direct thermal labels (no ribbon required), depending on the model and application. Some Zebra printers support both types. Weyfringe supplies Zebra-compatible barcode labels, including plain, pre-printed and colourwashed options, with stock sizes available for next working day delivery.

Q. What types of barcode labels do you supply?

Weyfringe supplies a wide range of barcode labels, including:

    • Plain self-adhesive labels
    • Pre-printed barcode labels with branding, fixed text, compliance symbols and hazard identification such as ADR / HazChem diamondsColourwashed labels for identification, zoning and process control
    • Thermal transfer labels
    • Direct thermal labels

Stock plain labels are available for next working day delivery. Non-stock sizes, pre-printed and colourwashed labels are typically supplied within 7–10 working days.

Q. What is the difference between thermal transfer and direct thermal labels?

Thermal transfer labels use a ribbon that is heated by the printhead to transfer ink onto the label surface. This produces a durable, long-lasting print suitable for manufacturing, warehousing and asset tracking.
Direct thermal labels use heat-sensitive material and do not require a ribbon. They are commonly used for short-life applications such as shipping labels and logistics barcodes.

Q. Do I need a ribbon for barcode labels?

A ribbon is required when printing thermal transfer labels. Direct thermal labels do not require a ribbon. Many barcode printers can print both types, allowing you to select the most appropriate solution based on label lifespan, environment and cost.

Q. Can you supply pre-printed barcode labels?

Yes. Weyfringe supplies pre-printed labels, including logos, fixed text, symbols and coloured backgrounds. These are ideal where consistent branding, compliance information or repeat data is required. Pre-printed labels are typically supplied within 7–10 working days, depending on artwork approval and specification.

Q. What are colourwashed labels used for?

Colourwashed labels are commonly used for visual identification, stock rotation, batch control, location marking and safety systems. They are widely used in warehousing, manufacturing and logistics environments. Weyfringe supplies colourwashed labels in a range of sizes and colours, with a 7–10 working day lead time.

Q. What size barcode labels should I use?

The correct barcode label size depends on the barcode type, scanning distance, printer resolution and available space. Standard sizes suit many applications, but where these are not suitable, Weyfringe can supply custom-cut label sizes. Non-stock sizes are typically supplied within 7–10 working days.
